Christoph Willibald Gluck was a cosmopolitan in the true sense of the word: born in Bavaria, musically trained in Milan, resident and actively working in both Vienna and Paris, as well as spending time in Prague as a student. His Orfeo ed Euridice was originally performed in Italian in Vienna in 1762 and is considered the first of his “reform” operas.
